Genes Under Stress

The combination of a stressful environment and poor diet can compromise immunity, lead to metabolic syndromes, and have negative systemic effects on an organism. In this study we challenge fruit flies with stressful temperature exposures (hot and cold) and manipulate their diet (too much and not enough, altered protein content) to assess their ability to cope with stress. We are particularly interested in differences between female and male sensitivity relative to enzymatic activity and metabolic redundancy / compensation correlative to human health.
